Apothekerei Dr. Grintz offers its customers an extensive range of medical products and medicines ‒ both in-store at four locations in Munich as well as online via a mail-order shop. The business concept of combining a physical pharmacy with online retail presented Dr Grintz with the challenge of finding an efficient packaging solution that would optimise shipping. The products are sold via different online marketplaces. In addition to process reliability, efficient staff deployment is also required to ensure dependable delivery. ‘The challenge is to make optimum use of the given conditions and resources and thus create a cost-effective mail order business,’ explains Dr Grintz.
Automated packaging solution leads to significant shipping performance
Apothekerei Dr. Grintz offers 50,000 different medical products and medicines. In the dispatch centre, these are initially sorted for the local stores and the online pharmacy before being stored with the help of an automated picking system. This is also where the order-related retrieval of the products takes place in preparation for despatch. The VariMailer® Pro seamlessly completes this existing process. The orders are pre-packaged for the VariMailer® Pro and arrive at the packing station fully prepared.
Employees now only need to perform two simple steps: Insert the product and press the trigger. The VariMailer® Pro packs the product into the form-fitting V-Mail®, which is already labelled and ready for dispatch. 3,000 – 5,000 V-Mails® can be sent per day via the VariMailer® Pro. ‘We have been able to almost completely replace the small parcels used previously,’ says Dr Grintz. V-Mail as merchandise mail or small parcels therefore offers a significant cost advantage and enables a higher output. ‘The working time per order dispatched has been reduced by as much as 60%,’ adds Dr Grintz.
The simple operation of VariMailer® Pro is enabled by an intuitive user interface that guides the user through each step of the process ‒ no extensive training is required. As a result, Pharmacy Dr Grintz benefits from flexible staff deployment, which also allows untrained staff to be used in the process, thus creating a higher level of planning security. This is an effective strategy for coping with the shortage of skilled labour and changing staff availability. Dr Grintz: ‘We now even have the opportunity to grow with existing staff.’
