Faust linoleum benefits from sustainable, product-tailored solution for shipping protection

Faust Linoleum manufactures high-quality, customised tables and table tops with an eco-friendly linoleum coating and delivers them to customers throughout Europe using their own fleet of vehicles. The family business is based in the Alpine region and processes the natural product linoleum from renewable resources. In Papier Sprick, Faust Linoleum has found a provider of a packaging solution that not only fulfils their sustainability requirements, but also offers reliable, high-quality protection for the Faust quality products.

Faust Linoleum focuses on maximum customisability for their products: customers can design their custom table top using an online configurator and order it with various accessories. This made finding the right packaging solution a challenge: ‘The dimensions and shape of the products to be packaged can vary greatly depending on the order,’ explains Managing Director Antonia Faust. Therefore, customisable packaging was needed that would provide reliable protection and thus minimise transport damage, which usually occurs in the last few metres at the customer’s premises. The packaging solution also needed to be particularly space-saving in order to ensure efficient utilisation of the cargo area during transport.

‘We used to pack our tabletops in bubble wrap – but we wanted to move away from this as part of our sustainability strategy,’ explains founder Franz Faust. ‘Plastic and our eco-friendly linoleum don’t go together’.

Since 2022, the Papier Sprick product DUO-Pack Soft, a corrugated cardboard with fleece lamination in E-flute, has offered reliable surface protection to prevent scratches. ‘In addition to the environmental benefits, we also believe that the panels are now better protected,’ says Franz Faust. The special feature: the DUO-Pack Soft, which is supplied in rolls, is tailored to the product and pre-cut for each package on a daily basis. This is done using a flatbed plotter, which cuts the DUO-Pack Soft to fit the order, which is then made available in the packing area. This improves handling and process speed during packing.

Avoid transport damage with high-quality edge protection

The edges of the table tops also proved to be particularly susceptible to damage. Initially, cardboard strips were used as edge protection, but these offered potential for improvement in terms of appearance and handling. Jörg Kaschny and Denis Eckiert from Papier Sprick started an optimisation process together with Faust Linoleum: various options were tested, samples were provided and readjusted as required. ‘The collaboration worked extremely well – we received expert, trustworthy advice that was tailored to our products,’ says the Managing Director. In the end, the paper Sprick U-profiles with fleece lamination in various sizes were chosen over plastic foam profiles. ‘The product works very well for us and is already having an effect in reducing the number of complaints,’ says Antonia Faust.

The fleece-laminated U-profiles from Papier Sprick allow the table tops to be protected on all sides and at the same time achieve significant optimisation benefits in the process. Not only handling and process speed, but also the packagings visual appearance could be sustainably improved. The flexible application possibilities of the edge protectors are particularly evident in the packaging of customised shapes: the profiles also fit securely to round table tops and provide reliable protection.
